Buzz Monitoring – Serph Rocks

What is Serph?

It is a buzz monitor. A buzz monitor shows what is being said on the web right now.

Serph is described on their page as…

When you type a query into Serph, it goes out and searches online social media to find the latest buzz. After it gathers the results, they are sorted and organized so the most recent buzz appears first. Serph gathers these results from blog search engines, social media websites, social news websites and social bookmarking websites. This allows Serph to show you exactly what people are saying on the web right now.

It is a very impressive tool. There are two things I liked about it almost immediately. First and foremost, you can use it free to check out what it is about. I like this. I was about to do a buzz monitor article for my own devious purposes and I was a bit miffed by a couple of products out there where you have to set up a demo, or go through other hoops, just to check them out.

Serph is free, yum.

Serph provides recent results that are unique and comprehensive. I was surprised to find a few things I was not finding with other services.

I did a search for “feedthebot” (my nickname). Here is what I found…

Serph results for feedthebot

The Serph results for “feedthebot” were very good and pointed me to some things I didn’t know about. I recommend using it. It is important also to realize that Serph is designed to return recent results, in other words, what is happening at the moment. It will not return a comprehensive list of everything that is on the web about you, it will return the results that give you an idea about what the “buzz” is around the term you search for.

Useful Neato Tip: If you know someones nickname, but you can’t remeber their real name, you could do a Serph search for the nickname and you will likely see the persons real name in the “Recommendations” part of the page. (In the above picture we searched for “feedthebot” and look over at the recommendations where is shows “Patrick”, “Pat”, and “Pat Sexton”)

Who made Serph?

Serph is one of a few useful tools that is provided by Neil Patel’s social media marketing firm, ACS.

Interesting tool. The World Bank has developed something similar, to basically develop vertical views of the web. It’s a bit more heavy on the tech side (you need to download and install it on your server) but it basically does what serph does and more. Check it out: http://buzzm.worldbank.org (full disclosure: i conceived and managed the development of the buzzmonitor at the World Bank).

    Cheers,
