I live on an island in the Philippines between Cebu and Bohol called Lapu Lapu. Yesterday on October 15th (local date) at just after 8AM there was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that seemed to go on forever.
There have been 28 earthquakes since that one from 4.5 to 6.0 in magnitude. The earthquakes, in fact continue as I write this. (Two have happened while making this image).
My home and building was damaged quite alot.
When the initial quake occurred I was in my condo. Anna was at work.
The big violet shaking started to intensify and there was concrete falling from my ceiling and walls.
Cracks started coming down the walls and I began running. I am on the fourth floor and went for the emergency stairwell.
Below is the lobby of the building as I was leaving during the initial quake (the situation got worse).
When I got outside there was water coming out of the exterior wall and a crack forming that is now around 15 feet high and thirty feet across…
The earthquake was still happening. There were people coming out of the building, who like me, were running and freaked out.
The lobby area was now dropping concrete from the roof and the doorways were cracking and bending.
The fish market where you can get fresh fish including Salmon (a luxury for me here in the Philippines) collapsed and killed several people.
The historic churches many of which are hundreds of years old, were mostly destroyed.
After the initial quake ended we started looking around for the damage / people still inside. On my floor, in my place there was water everywhere and my computers were on the floor. I grabbed a laptop and looked to see what the earthquake was. Google already had it up, a 7.2 on Bohol, the island I can see from my patio across the channel.
People started yelling outside and then I felt the earth quaking again, and ran out losing my laptop in my attempt to get down four flights of stairs in a jump over the railings type of craziness.
This was fifteen minutes or so after the first one. The second quake (a 5.3 just a few miles from my place) stopped only to be replaced by yet another earthquake a minute or two later (another 5.3). All of the concrete that was shaken loose in the first, was beginning to come down, and the sounds were frightening.
Like an idiot, after fifteen or twenty minutes I went back in and you will never guess what happened…
Yep another earthquake. But I found my laptop and went out to the front. Hundreds of people were now in the courtyard and you could see a sea of people out by the street. I was the only one who had a laptop (with internet from a dongle) there and people gathered around and we started to try to get news.
Me and Anna stayed outside last night while the aftershocks (each a large earthquake themselves) kept shaking the buildings on my compound, thankfully Anna got some sleep.
It is now the next day and the earthquakes keep happening. Scary shit.
I am never going to live in another place with more than one floor.
So if I don’t respond to your emails, this is why. I do not even know where me and Anna are staying tonight. The buildings where her family live are all constructed of hollow concrete blocks and I dont trust them. My building is stable, but too hard for me and Anna to get out of quick enough. I haven’t really slept much and I am probably not thinking right.
To see the quakes, you can go to the USGS page here which will show all the earthquakes in this area that are over 4.5 magnitude (I think it up to thirty different quakes now).
