Yes the Google webmaster tools are COMPLETELY worthless. The information is nothing but BS, the "links to your site" should read "some links to your site", the crawl statistics.. WTF??? Worthless. Submit a sitemap so google can find pages it may not otherwise find... Why? They wont index them anyway! Google is a joke, all they care about is ADWORDS. Caffeine is even worse than before. If you have any plans to create a website in 2010, focus on optimization for Bing as it will soon have 30% of the search market when it takes over search for Yahoo.

30% of something is better than the 0% of nothing you will receive from Google the first year your website exists if you are trying to rank in a competitive field. Google want your CASH!!

I have to say that I don''t agree though, as a new guy to the www I did find the site useful, sure a little mind boggling but what isn't when you are new to something?

I remember looking at wordpress and thinking that I would never follow it all but now I zoom around having fun!

I guess that Google have too much information about your site and to have it all up front could frighten people off....don't forget that Google invented the minimalist front page!
Thanks Aniruddh

Great Post Patrick!!!
I never paid heed to this.You have really made an interesting comparison.I even agree with the above comment, it might be possible that now google doesn't want webmasters to learn the tricks of the trade so easily. There strategy could be to promote their other proprietary products, thats why this deviation.

Hey Patrick,

Take a step back and think about this for a second; maybe it's misleading on purpose. Rather, 2 purposes;

(1) over the years, the information was clear and concise, and could truly guide a webmaster to having Google be ok with the site. This worked in the webmasters favor. So if that formula is swapped around and the page is confusing and misleading, it's harder for a webmaster to rank organically, if at all. What to do?

(2) well, when all else fails for a new site that won't rank.. what do you do? Adwords. The backbone of Google's income model. Interested in finding out if there has been a correlation in timeline between Google changing helpful hints to ambiguity, and an increase in Adwords accounts opening.
