How to Market your Website for 100 Dollars
Need some ideas on how to market your website on a limited budget?
I contacted the biggest names in web marketing, branding, and search engine optimization and I asked them all the same question.
“What would you do if you only had 100 dollars to market your website?”
It is very possible to get a healthy amount of traffic to your website even when your main asset is time, not money. Whether you are a single parent, a small business with a limited budget, or you are just a dreamer, there are a surprising amount of things you can do to make your website soar.
The first step is learning from the community who does this for a living.
I was overwhelmed by the great advice and humor offered for this article when I contacted “the big guns” of the search marketing world. Here are their answers to the following question.
“If you had to make a website soar but had only small chunks of money to spend on it what would you do? – (The “chunks” are 100 dollars, 250 dollars and 500 dollars.)
Aaron Wall

Aaron Wall of SEObook.com is one of the most recognizable names in the field of search engine optimization (SEO) and marketing. His SEO Blog has essentially become the defacto game plan of profiting on the web through search engines. He is an aggressive and creative viral marketer who thinks of the Web in terms of how ideas spread and offers his consultation services for mid to enterprise level clients. Here is what he said:
If one has virtually no money then presumably they do not value their time highly in terms of money…thus a lack of funds can be seen as a resource that helps make you more efficient in the longrun.
If I had $500 or less to work on marketing and was starting a website today I would:
- find an income source that can help me pay my living costs while I furiously learned
- spend $20 to $200 on books about the topic I am interested in, and I would get a few background books on marketing and the web including Purple Cow, The Cluetrain Manifesto
, and Don’t Make Me Think

- create a new word/phrase and register (myword).com or buy a .net or .org that was available for $8 from GoDaddy
- buy $7 a month hosting from Dreamhost
- Start a WordPress blog on my domain covering whatever I am learning or am an expert at. Place no ads on the site and be actively involved in the community to help build up my authority.
- I would browse various theme browsers to find a theme that looked pretty good for the theme of my site.
- I would buy a logo for my site from a forum (for $10 to $100 dollars) or buy one from a logo design firm (for $100 to $300)
- Install a free analytics product to track progress.
- beg borrow steal barter etc to find at least a couple trusted link sources that are willing to link to my site.
- Use free keyword research tools and track the news to find subjects to write about.
- Create highly linkworthy noncommercial content and market the hell out of it, using email, social marketing, and perhaps adwords.
- Syndicate some of your content to well read channels. If I were starting today in SEO I would make sure my stuff was syndicated to WebProNews.
- Review related products and services and pitch their affiliate offers and / or place adsense ads on sites to test baseline income levels.
- As I started gaining authority I would look to reinvest into faster growth, doing things like buying quality links and building tools to garner more authority.
- As soon as I could afford to I would go to off line conferences for my industry.
- No matter how I was trying to make money or how I was making money I would also create at least one site about a topic I am passionate about even if it did not seem like it would be profitable…that will teach you more about the web than any guru can, plus that will eventually shield you from the feast or famine client services based lifestyle.
Andy Beal
Andy Beal is a blogging and search engine marketing consultant and is considered one of the world’s most respected online marketing experts. He is the author of the popular Marketing Pilgram blog. Andy has worked with many top companies such as Motorola, CitiFinancial, Lowes, Quicken Loans, DeWALT, NBC and Smarter.com. Here is his advice:
$100 = Not a lot you can do with $100. I’d probably use it to upgrade my server so that it was on a dedicated IP address and the domain name was registered for at least 3 years.
$250 = I’d hire a copywriter to create a great “Top 100″ list that relates to my industry. By the time they do their research and put it together, you’ve probably got at least 5 hours of work out of them. I’d probably
create a press release that highlights the key points and submit on PR Web.
$500 = I’d get a $250 roundtrip ticket to my nearest SES, SMX or PubCon conference. Spend $100 for a hotel for one night. Then blow the remaining $150 buying drinks at the bar for all the SEO’s that hang out. It will be the best $500 you’ve ever spent!
Andy Hagans
Andy Hagans is known as the webs best “link baiter”. The ability to get links to your website is one of the most important factors of how well your website will do in the search engines, so his link baiting services are in high demand. He has been a consistent and professional source of information on improving your rank in the search engines for years. He is also the author of Tropical SEO. Here is his input:

Sorry if it sounds asinine, but it is honestly what I would do!
I also think it’s impossible to be that specific bc every project is
different, but if you want specific examples:
100: Maybe a listing in joeant.com and/or botw.org
250: Add $50 and get a listing in dir.yahoo.com
500: you could do the above things, and have $200 to pay a good writer
to write you a good link bait
1000: maybe the above things, plus 2 more good link baits!

I think a better phrase for what you are describing is “budget SEO.”
To answer your question, I am assuming that I have the same knowledge I do now, am starting a site from scratch, and we’re staying white-hat (maybe a little gray)…
With $100… I think I would buy some cheap hosting, put up a WordPress CMS, find some good affiliate programs, and start writing and optimizing.
I’m not sure I’d do much different with $250 and $500 other than maybe putting it towards an SEOmoz Membership, and/or buy some links, and definitely buy some drinks.
I’m sure I would probably look at things a bit differently if this really happened to be the case, but it isn’t!
Lee Odden
Lee Odden is the founder of Top Rank Results online marketing and is a sought after speaker on the subject of search engines, social media, and online marketing. His online marketing blog is a widely respected resource where he publishes articles regularly. His answers:
That’s an interesting question and when I think of it, the thought that money is only one form of currency when it comes to promoting web sites comes to mind.
I would certainly make sure the site hosting situation was well taken care of, along with site design and functionality, so chunks of money as necessary should be allocated there.
Otherwise, I would make sure the standard site promotion tactics are in place: Optimized content creation, link building and especially online and offline networking. Do a great job of telling the story the site has to tell and get the attention of journalists writing about that industry. Become a trusted resource without demands for reciprocation from the media and they will reward you with generous coverage, as will the search engines.
Also, attending a few conferences per year for education but particularly for networking can prove to be a very worthwhile investment. If you can’t afford the conference fee, try to get a press pass.
Regarding the currency comment above, I would also take a look at the industry the site is in to see if there are opportunities to give prominent individuals with significant spheres of influence something they want that doesn’t cost you anything to give. With a blog, this could be in the form of interviews, product reviews, aggregated resources and company profiles. Also, referring on leads (good ones) that are not a fit for you to others in the industry can serve as a sort of informal currency to open doors to business relationships that might not otherwise have been available. Doing this prompts those with influence to give back in the form of links, referrals, partnerships, participation in new networks and connections online/offline – the kinds of opportunities that can make a business soar.
Neil Patel
Neil Patel is known as one of the most famous people on the web. His expertise is personal branding which he speaks of on his new site, Quicksprout.com. His clear and distinct advice on creating and expanding a brand is read and followed by the some of the most influential people on the web. His advice is widely sought out, here is what he would do:
If I only had a small amount of money and wanted to make a website soar I would leverage social media. You could potentially do it for free, but if I had $100 I would try and create 1 great piece of content and push it out on all of the social sites. If I had $250 I would try and create 2 great pieces of content and if I had $500 I would create 4 pieces. The overall goal would be to get these articles thousands of unique visitors and thousands of links so that the site could get some search love.
Patrick Sexton
CEO of GetListed.org and author of Feedthebot.com which describes the Google webmaster guidelines in layman’s terms. He is widely regarded as the best looking man in SEO. [Editors note: The bio of Patrick Sexton may be slightly biased due to the fact that he is the author of this article.]
Here is what I would do:
100 dollars – First off, have valuable, useful content. You will have to learn, and learn, and then learn some more. Don’t forget to use and explore the basic resources and tools that Google offers.
If you do not have a website yet, use this money to acquire a real web host. Use caution when you choose a web host, there are many possible pitfalls. I suggest my personal favorite, BlueHost (I did a review of Bluehost here). Do not go with Yahoo, although Yahoo provides excellence in the many things they do, their hosting packages are severely restrictive and have some very basic problems that will affect your efforts negatively.
A good webhost will provide stats, easy access, and other goodies that make it worthwhile. Your web hosting is an important decision, and should cost around 7 to 9 dollars a month. If a webhost costs 3.99 per month, there is a reason and the reason is that they do not offer the tools you need.
If you already have a website or blog then I recommend using your 100 dollars as follows: 79 dollars to buy Aaron’s SEObook. The remaining money should be spent on on listing yourself properly in the appropriate local search engines (if you have an actual store or business). Check to see how are listed using the free local search tool Getlisted.org. Here is a good selection of the places that are often free or cheap to be listed on.
250 dollars – If you have this to spend do what I mentioned above and then add yourself to the Best of the web directory – BOTW.org and spend the rest of the money on becoming a premium SEOmoz Member. This will not give you just the value of the premium content tools, and guides, but it will also give you mucho networking benefits.
500 dollars – Do what I mentioned above and submit your site to the Yahoo directory (this costs 299 per year).
Todd Malicoat (aka Stuntdbl)
Todd is now and has been for a long time one of the most important voices of search engine marketing. His in depth knowledge of social media keeps him busy with clients seeking viral pushes for their online interests. Here are his thoughts:
Firstly, this is a really great topic. The awesome glory of the internet is the accessibility of people. It no longer takes thousands of dollars to “meet” your favorite authors or personalities. Many times, they’ll be polite enough to respond to your e-mails if they’re done so in the right fashion. This same accessibility comes into play with business people.
The pitch may not always be money, but the point is you have the accessibility when you come up with the pitch, and many people respect someone who is hungry with persistence (within reason) and a good work ethic.
One of the true beauties of SEO is hearing the success stories of bootstrappers (like your story with feedthebot). As a quick aside – one great use of $10, would be picking up the “bootstrapper’s bible” by
Seth Godin, it has some fantastic rules and ideas for when you are in bootstrapper mode. Personally, when I graduated from school, and knew I needed a job, I KNEW that I wanted to do SEO professionally because of the tremendous value I saw. I wrote up what I thought to be a fantastic and eloquent pitch, and systematically tailored the e-mail to every local marketing company I could find. I then followed up with phone calls.
A few gave me interviews, and most turned me down. The few that gave me interviews, I didn’t have a good enough pitch for to land a job. I ended up landing a job for an IT company that was a fantastic place to start. I parlayed the resources and knowledge I learned there to attend conferences and learn more. Setting goals of WHY you are doing something, and the metrics for that success are hugely important.
I don’t think there is one sure fire plan based on the amount of money you have, but the point is, that it shouldn’t take MUCH money to make more if you do so strategically using the tools that are available to you. The power of e-mail alone is amazing. The power of a great article and web publishing is astounding. The power of good links and great rankings is mind boggling. The power of your voice and your mind can help you to
up those chunks until you’re playing with much bigger pieces. It takes some cajones, lots of dedication, and a workaholic mentality, but a lot can certainly be done with a little. There is a lot of proof within this
industry that the “American dream” is alive and well.

I have a feeling the answers are a bit hard to compare — is it “knowing what you know” and having $100 (ie assuming you lost everything except your computer, web-access and $100) or is it “starting fresh” with $100 (ie somebody who just got a computer + web-access, has never done anything online and has $100 to spare)?
It’s hard to invest $100 in content when you have no clue as to what you could be doing – similarly it’s a waste of $79 to get the SEO book if wrote the book yourself

Good question Patrick. Its always nice to get tips straight from some of the industry’s finest. I think if I only had a hundred bucks for Web site promotion, I would start by spending $27.59 on 1 week subscription to Wordtracker (I actually prefer KeywordDiscovery, but it would take too much budget for this scenario). I’m of the opinion that despite the dramatic evolution of search, keyword research is still the backbone of any successful Web site promotion strategy. Whether you are optimizing your site, writing a press release, building links, or creating link bait; you better be using relevant, moderate-high traffic, under-competitive keywords. I’d spend the remaining $62.41 on 1 or 2 under the radar permanent links from a topically relevant site (that doesn’t know any better) with good context and some nice co-citation! The rest of the promotion strategy would be carried out with my own blood, sweat, and tears (the grind, blocking and tackling, links and content, etc…).

I would use the hundred to learn more in hopes I could make more to invest later. Many of my projects started on a shoe-string budget, but managed to succeed due to diligence and hard work.
No one ever said that the success of a site is measured by the marketing budget alone, however the general rule is, the more you can invest, the better the results will be. I have seen so many waste a bunch of time and money on things they don’t even need, it would be really cool to see some stories from the industry that reviewed some of the most successful projects launched with less than $500.00 or so dollars and the outcomes.

Google guidelines state that paid links are a no-no. But several responders mentioned paying for BOTW / Yahoo Directory listings as one of the first things you would do. What gives?

It looks like the main element for making a website popular is time (spent on learning, creating, etc.). The more you learn, the more you can focus your content and networking efforts. Money is just the, important, facilitator.

Excellent post Patrick, and some really good tips there. The only tip I don’t agree with is Andy Hagans tip “getting a listing in Yahoo Dir”, I believe getting listed in the Yahoo directory can actually be “bad” for your website. Depending on what website it is, if it’s a blog yes maybe but if it’s a full website, I wouldn’t. The second you sign up in the directory you wave goodbye to optimising your Meta Description. I’m a big believer of the importance of the meta description tag and would certianly not PAY $50 to give the chance to optimise each and every page meta description away.

Im surprised that no one mentioned arbitrage…
1. Get a cheap $5/mo host.
2. Get a .info ($.99)
3. Drop Google Adwords onto some expensive keyword pages.
4. Find “matching” coupons for 7search, looksmart, and enhance
5. Advertise for less competitive, 2nd and 3rd tier terms at pennies per click.
6. Turn your $100 into $200.
Rinse, repeat.
(ok, there is a little more too it, but there is much less insecurity involved than relying on SEO, LinkBaiting or Viral Marketing because you know exactly how much the traffic costs up-front)

Assuming you have a computer and a connection. Otherwise were talking about going to a library, borrowing a computer, leeching bandwidth etc, thats all another story.
With $100….Buy a keyword associated dot com domain (buy two for $5 each) for and save it for later.
Learn PPC and affiliate marketing / reselling by doing a lot of reading online, tapping resources, friends and forums.
Make the $100 turn into $200
Repeat. Maybe sell a spare domain on the way.
Get cheap hosting and put some content on your domain/site. Let it sit for a while, go back to the above steps.

With limited resources, as has been noted, your time and efforts will be your currency, not money. I’d second Aaron on getting a job to have the ends meet, then buy smth like SEO book to learn the basics and then read and learn from prominent SEO blogs (like those of the experts here) for a half a year at least.
The easiest and the hardest way would be to create valuable content for your audience and get noticed in your online industry community. However, it’ll still take time to learn how to do things right.
While it was said that it’d help to get experts on your blog, you need first to be able to offer something in exchange, be it your audience attention or something else (a guest post on their blog?). Thus, it creates a catch 22, which can only be broken by building great stuff on your website and getting noticed.
Ironically, you’ll be able to get what you want, when you don’t need it (so you need to work hard to get anything you want, anyway).
Btw, I heard (can’t find the link) that Yahoo doesn’t show dir listings in SERPs any more. Not that it matters with the right meta tags to prevent showing dir descs, though.

Buy 7 bags of Starbucks Verona Coffee…… get a new Bunn quick brew coffee maker and consume all 7 bags of coffee in 7 days. Use your caffeine induced rants to fill your blog with really strange content. Send link requests to the top 50 or so coffee sites and try for some good ibl’s…. of course your writing style may be a bit hyped up which would certainly tip off the site owners that you are not a software program who “really loves your siteâ€. Make sure you have a friend at Starbucks who will start the viral process with internal emails – Subj line: Look at this Idiot…….. Watch your stats increase… Add a linkshare ad for Starbucks to monetize and see what happens. Ok…where did I put my cup of Folgers Half Caf???

Great ideas on inexpensive ways to get attention to your new project. As I read through Aaron Wall’s response, I counted 9 of 16 suggestions already implemented with my blog. It is a PR5 now and it’s gained traffic, so I must be doing something right. I created two “101″ lists which helped out a lot with incoming links.

Excellent article, thanks! From my experience with hundreds of big sites, is focus on the content as much as possible, it will take time, but personally content is always the safest bet. you can invest enormous amount of time in linking strategies, and often, imho, it’s a short term because the search engines can change their rules whenever they want. Good content is timeless.

Interesting points made by all and the general message is the same throughout, get good content and lots of links. Unique article submissions are definitely one of the best ways to spread your links fast and furiously. Time spent on these things on the long run is invaluable, like seeding a lawn, it takes a while but eventually you have lush green grass.

It’s interesting how none of You have really given any advice at all. I have a few domains that might not be the best in the world (yet), but I am getting there. After all I have only being doing this for four months. Anyway. It does not cost anywhere near as much to get the name out there. my latest site is only 2 weeks old and it is already on the social networks and had over 15000 visitors and has brought me some money. I haven’t spend anywhere near a hundred dollars yet. From what I am gathering from Your “advices” You are simply avoiding the question and are trying to get us to pay You to do it for us. Good marketing, but You have simply told me to stay away from You.

Yeah – kind of all rings true but (sorry if anyone’s already raised it) is has a couple of biggish flaws: yes you can buy a book for a few quid, but reading it, understanding it and acting on it is no small task. Assuming you earn a decent amount, that time don’t come for free. And certainly not for under $100.
It’s kind of like saying that the easiest way to make a million is to buy a domain name “and make a really good website.”

This is truly a very informative article. I must agree with the experts that though money will take you places for SEO, it is knowing how to use your money that will make the difference. A person with $500 may do better than one who has $5000 if the latter has no idea on what really matters.
Content is truly one’s best bet. With the way information runs freely on the internet, the challenge is to come up with something that people will find to be of value, either as a resource or for entertainment.
If I have less than a dollar for promoting my site, I will come up with quality content and market it like crazy everywhere. Making up for lack of money with creativity, hard work and time will definitely be rewarding.

Great post! Even for someone who’s been doing this for a long long time, there are definitely some good tips here that I haven’t heard of and haven’t tried (yet). I love the tip about Web Pro News…cannot believe that I haven’t done that yet. Also, when it comes to domain names, you might consider looking at the expired domains…some already have traffic going to them and there are some pretty good names out there that people aren’t renewing. You might be able to pay $15 for a good expired domain name rather than trying to find one that hasn’t been registered before.
Also, you might consider writing (or having someone write) a press release about your new site…or wait until you’ve create a fair amount of content on it until you distribute the press release.

This is venkat from SGD Networks. Fine all experts talk about $100, $250,$500 and $1000
I agree with them and its a good stuff really when people look for marketing their website and revenue resources to earn living income or to promote the same for more revenues.
From my observation this( $100, $250, ) concept works but will take much time to get targeted visitors and revenues.
If it all possible so easy all we can make much concepts with good content and make much revenues. I am sure intially just having a website never generate revenues and when we buy some quality links from good topic related websites we need to pay every month. Can it possible for $100 or $250, $500 to pay the regular fee to get quality backlinks from atleast 4 – 5 websites?

Pretty sound tips even if you have more than $100. It sounds like nearly everyone feels that having a good host is very important. I currently use BlueHost for my blog and they are pretty good. They offer a lot of features and good analytics. But I do want to take a look at some of the other recommendations listed here for a new site. Less than $10 sounds reasonable.

This is an excellent post, useful for all I dare to say. Regardless of whether you have $100 or $100,000 for marketing. You should read between the lines and understand that the most important thing is not money, but vision and dedication. Or at least this is how I interpreted all the advice. SEO and SEM have become so important these days and many rely on others to do what they should do themselves. As the old saying puts it, if you want to do something right, do it yourself.

Ok it is inexpensive in dollars to build a website and host it. It is expensive in hours to build content and do the social networking stuff and SEO stuff. I built my website by had spending little money. Hosting was $2.77/mo. I was up and running for under $5.00. It has taken about 80 or 100 hours to build the content and do the SEO work.

Although $100 is not a huge budget whatsoever for starting a website, it’s still a workable amount. I’d of course register my domain for about $7. Next, I’d secure basic hosting to get started with. I know many question the reliablity of low-cost hosting, but there are plenty of reputable web hosts with starter packages for less than $25 a year. I’d then invest in a pre-designed web template that closely matches the look and feel I’m after. Just a few quick and easy mods and the site is complete, looking as professional as ever! With the remaining cash, I’d scour eBay for a good html reference guide so I could begin to learn what’s going on behind the design.

If you have a friend that can build apps get them to create something interactive and useful that Facebook and other social networking users in your target market will be attracted to use.
For instance we are working on creating a mini gallery that pulls images from our online New Zealand art gallery for members to promote their artwork on their profile, or for people to support NZ art and increase the (usually unplesant) asthetics of their profile.
We hope this will increase brand awareness, drive qualified traffic and build links.
Creating a community via forums and blogs obviously attract your target market too, and are relativly cheap – involving your time to keep them alive.

Well, read it and have tried it, done 99>99% of what is recommended but still not seeign the kind of traffic I want. PR gone up to 4 and feel my product is priced under virtually everyone else in the field, but not getting the traffic. Spent way over the limits here but took my time, started really low on $ invested, read a lot and know way way more than a couple of years ago. But enjoyed the read and good to validation of what I have been doing, next step is social bookmarking, this is a part time job and labor of love for me, thanks for the article am sure there are many more like me rather than the ones with great traffic, but that’s what makes it allinterestign and exciting.

I agree that quality links are a great way to start. You can get them from many providers, but do your research before you hire someone to submit to directories, search engines and article sites — often, these companies list sites with false Page Ranks that mislead the uninitiated into believing their sites are being submitted to PR 8′s and PR 9′s when they’re actually being submitted to PR 1′s and PR 2′s. Also, many of these companies use lists that are defunct or sites that have been penalized and then dropped in the rankings.
That being said, if you have a good list, a new website can garner as many as 200 links from the top web directories, article sites, search engines and social bookmarking websites for under $100.

I recently launch my website and I am not sure what to do to promote traffic. I have a few ideas for members once they sign up but how do i get those member? I have very little money. Please help me. I have a budget of $100.00

This is great, but we are in reccison a $100.00 might be hard to come by. I recently discovered this free site einformationsource it allows you to leave links and promot products. If money is an issue you may want to check them out.

#1 – (FREE) I would do some free research on Google to figure out a topic and “theme” for my website. I would spend several days making sure profitable traffic numbers are there.
#2 ($5) I would set up a Google adwords account to research how competitive a market I’m getting into. See how much advertisers are paying for the same search terms I’m going to try to rank for.
#3 – Set up a Social network consisting of Squidoo, Digg, Hubpages, ezinearticles.com etc.
#4 – Set up a theme-based hosted blog on WordPress.net
#5 Begin creating hubs, articles, blog posts, and lenses (offering great content) related to and pointing to different pages on your theme based website.
#6 – Begin submitting your site and blog to various free directories on the web. Find out which blogs in your niche and related niches offer “do follow” links, read the posts and offer quality replies.
Lather-Rinse-Repeat
How much does it cost? Depending on your hosting about $75 bucks a year. Not bad.

Its tough to market with only $100 dollars but it can be done, or at least $100 dollars of marketing. You will want to probaby find some promo codes for Google, Yahoo, & MSN adcenter to start with. Then take the remaining $100 dollars and put it to Google Adwords.
