Love your style Patrick. Agree with your message. It reminds me of my new favorite quote... "I was asked recently the difference between involvement and commitment. Consider a bacon and egg sandwich. The egg is involved and the pig is commited."

In my mind, successful SEO requires the involvement of an involved and capable SEO. What are some of the ways that you get your clients to "be that pig"?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts in such an entertaining way.

What a terrific article! I recently wrote a piece along similar lines called Online Etiquette Is Just Common Sense, although I used Dale Carnegie instead of Douglas Adams, and instead of SEO the focus was on online etiquette. Okay, so maybe the piece wasn't similar at all. But seriously, the suggestions you're making are pretty close to the suggestions I made:

1) Be genuine.
2) Be interested in others.
3) Seek the positive.
4) Be generous.

Thanks for a great read!

Pat, an excellent article! Very well done!
I
am very glad to see that others realize that linking (linkbaiting) is not the panacea for a website. Only marketing through the big picture (giving users a message that is relevant to them) is what will create a good website experience.

Less crap, better marketing!

Well put and well said, Patrick Sexton.

The axiom that content is king never died. It also pre-dates websites by centuries.

Firm grasp of the obvious, but link strategies continue to be an important part of an overall traffic building campaign.

Very funny... Now I finally get it -- the whole social media thing, and it's connection to driving traffic. Thanks for clearing that up and for humoring me in the process.

Great post. I think what many have forgotten is that it is all about good quality unique content that is useful to people. A novice like me has stumbled upon that and I'm surprised that a lot more people who know more then me haven't. For one of my projects I maybe have 150 one way inbound links and outrank sites with thousands for some very compettive terms. What's the difference? I always suspected I have over 200 pages of unique content that is useful to people while they don't. This blog is quickly turning into a daily must read for me!
