I encounter an really nice old man almost daily who always says the same thing to me.

“A fast nickel beats a slow dime”, he says, “remember that young man.”

The man who says this to me is homeless and recycles for a living. What he is referring to is the way that in California, the return value of wine bottles and hard liquor bottles is less than that of beer bottles. Even though the value is less, he still picks them up and takes them to a recycling center. He told me how other people don’t bother picking up these types of bottles because they don’t have as much value.

“These people are idiots”, he confides to me, “they don’t realize that even though you get less money per pound, the bottles weigh so much more that you get more money at the end of the day.”
